Issued in 2007, the report, “Shark Depredation and Unwanted Bycatch,” found significant ecological, economic, and social problems resulting from shark interactions in longline fisheries.
The report, part of which appeared in the journal Marine Policy, concludes that immediate action is needed to develop methods to deter sharks from getting caught in fishing gear. Funding was provided by the report’s co-producers, the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council and the United Nations Environment Programme, along with the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and Royal Caribbean International.
